Whenever travelling I always carry and recommend a money belt.
Without sounding particularly sexist I would especially encourage female travellers to always carry a money belt (as my wife does).
Cash is always king in Latin American countries but obviously dont carry too much. I also take a travelex debit card that I fill up before I go (credit in a certain currency) then just withrdraw from that. The fees are reasonable and you can use them at any ATM. If you lose it or it gets stolen you can cancel it and still get access to your money when you get home without going through all the pain of cancelling all your credit cards ….
